The Amesbury Archer is an early Bronze Age man whose grave was discovered during excavations at the site of a new housing development in Amesbury near Stonehenge. The grave was uncovered in May 2002, and the man is believed to date from about 2300 BC. He is nicknamed the "archer" because of the many arrowheads that were among the artifacts buried with him.

Dead Sea scrolls

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of about 900 documents, including texts from the Hebrew Bible, discovered between 1947 and 1956 in eleven caves in and around the ruins of the ancient settlement of Khirbet Qumran on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea in the West Bank.

Akrotiri

The excavation of Akrotiri, Thera, under the directorship originally of the late Professor Spyridon Marinatos, and since his untimely death in 1974 that of Professor Christos Doumas, has been from its outset in 1967 under the sponsorship of the Archaeological Society in Athens. This Bronze Age city, which flourished thirty-six centuries ago, has produced a wealth of material, foremost amongst which are the artistically superb wall-paintings.

Kennewick Man

Kennewick Man is the name for the skeletal remains of a prehistoric man found on a bank of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington, USA on July 28, 1996.

Kensington rune stone

Is a slab of stone covered in runes found in central Minnesota. Supposedly, it proves that Viking explorers were able to penetrate nearly halfway across the North American continent. However, the authenticity of the stone is disputed.

Lindow Man

Is an example of a Celtic human sacrifice discovered in a bog near Manchester in 1984 by peat-cutters, a find known as a bog body. The body is now on display in The British Museum. The body's legs and pelvis were missing, leaving the chest, head and arms.

Linear B is a syllabic script that was used for writing Mycenaean Greek, an early form of Greek. It occurred primarily on tablets dated from the 14th and 13th centuries BC.

Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army is the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang the First Emperor of China. The terracotta figures, dating from 210 BC, were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers near Xi'an, Shaanxi province, China near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor.

Neanderthals

Neanderthals were a species of genus Homo who inhabited Europe and parts of what is now western Asia during the last ice age. They seem to have been well adapted to extreme cold, but appear to have had difficulty adapting to climatic changes near the end of the ice age. The first such fossils were found in 1856 near Dusseldorf in the Neander valley in Germany. Their characteristic style of stone tools is called the Mousterian Culture, after another prominent
archaeological site.

Newport ship

Is a 15th century sailing vessel discovered by archaeologists in June, 2002, at Newport, Monmouthshire, in the UK. The original length of the ship is estimated at 25 meters, and it would have been quite capable of continental voyages. However, it has been badly damaged by modern developments. It was found on the west bank of the River Usk, which runs through the city of Newport, and local people are campaigning to have the remains preserved in their entirety.

Otzi the Iceman

Is a natural mummy of a prehistoric man found by a couple of German tourists on September 19, 1991, in a glacier of the Ötztaler Alps. The well-preserved body of a 30-to-45-year old man dates back to 3300 BC. The body was examined, measured, x-rayed, and dated.

Rosetta Stone

Is a dark granite stone discovered in the Egyptian port city of Rosetta on July 15, 1799 by French Captain Pierre Bouchard during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. Inscribed on it is a text in Egyptian and Greek.

Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, is the site of two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries of the 6th century and early 7th century. One contained an undisturbed ship burial including a wealth of Anglo-Saxon artifacts of outstanding art-historical and archaeological significance, which are now held in the British Museum in London.

King Tut’s Tomb
